My Amaryllis and Clone Babies

Hello everyone, I thought I would have a blog today about my Amaryllis plants. Summer Breeze from the UK asked about the Amaryllis plants and how to work with them. She has been given 2 Amaryllis (one white, one red), and as she has never had one before, needed some advice. The Amaryllis plant is a very easy plant to work with and the reward is a beautiful bounty of wonderful flowers, one to two pods of flowers, with 4 to 5 flowers per pod. And they are very awesome to see. My White Amaryllis is giving me 2 pods and at least one of its clone babies is sending out a flower pod. This fall I will have to separate the clone babies from the mother. It will also give me a chance to repot the momma plant. I will take out all of my Amaryllis into the garden so they can soak up all of the sun that they can before they go dormant for a couple of months. I will then take them out into the light before Christmas. Here is a couple of photos of my Amaryllis.

  2. Hi Carole, My white Amaryllis surprized me, I thought it would not bloom this year, but low and behold I have 2 wonderfull flower pods. I have to figure out a way so they don't fall over when the flower come out. This plant is more than 10 years old now. The Red one that I have is now about 8 years old or so. The seedlings that I have are now one year old.

  3. Hello Horst, Thank you for showing your photo's. They are wonderful and I can see by your's that I have planted mine a bit too deep so will change that when the time's right. also it's great to see how a baby clone is there, maybe I will get one when mine is older. I didn't know these plants live that long! Now I can start a collection...LOL I will follow your advice and progress with great interest. Thank you. Summer.

  5. Summer, my White Amaryllis is a little too far out of the soil, the clone babies are pushing the mother up but the roots still are deep in the soil. Yours will get clone babies as well if you keep your plants long enough, don't forget that once the clone leaves show it will take 3 to 5 years for them to flower.

  10. The colours of Amaryllis are beautiful also the flowers, but the shape doesn't do a lot for me, preferring a bit more vegetation, But I am sure you will get a lot of pleasure having brought them on from babies. they will look stunning next year, [the top bit that is] ;-))
Thanks for visiting me and yes the walk was tiny bit more exciting then normal.

  11. Hey everyone, I was just looking & watering my plants and noticed that the left clone baby is shooting up another flower pod. Amazing, now I will have a whole bunch of flowers in about 2 to four weeks. Gonna take lots of photos. I have also done some repotting of on a couple of my seedling babies. The size of the bulbs are getting to be about half the size of a chicken egg.

  13. I could od with you to help out in my garden Horst, you appear to be very talented, with what we call 'green fingers' My favourite flowers are Pinks, the smell is just delightful., though they're nothing special to look at.

  14. Hi Arlene, what may I ask are Pinks. I have never heared of Pinks before.

When I was young I lived on the farm and my parents loved plants and animals. We had a half acre of garden and 2 acres of potatos. So as you can see I had a lot of experiance with gardens and plants. I love to listen to gardening shows, (radio & tv). I guess you can say that plants are one of my many hobbies.
