Making bread without buying yeast

This is for those that like to make their own bread but don’t know how to make Sour Dough Bread which is very simple.

http://youtu.be/YgJYSOwWlvU

I’ve made some Sour Dough Bread but not like the video I’m showing you right now. I will be trying this method today as I have some sour dough starter working right now. I will be making Sourdough Barley Bread and Sourdough Rye Bread.

I will let you know how I make out. Here is a video on how to make the starter.

I will let you know how I make out and show you the results.

  1. I have been baking buns using yeast for over 30 years ... it's not that bad to master, Horst ... and so yummy ... looking forward to your success with the sour dough bread ... long time no see, I know, but here I am again, trying to comment on your blog ... it kicked me out many times in the past ... always, cat.

    2. Hey Cat, I love crusty buns when they are fresh. But not that healthy for me.

  3. I look forward to seeing the result of your labour. I enjoy bread making but yeast is not hard to use.

    1. I realize that yeast is quicker, but I like to experiment and see if I can get a better tasting and healthier bread. I found Barley bread is very healthy for me as a Diabetic and am already seeing some results in my glucose readings. Barley bread is also very tasty. I'll show you some bread in my next post. I also make Barley Banana Bread. That's even tastier.

  4. Steve the Bread Guy is a good teacher in the making of sour dough bread, and I found him on YouTube a while ago but forgot I had! But I have now put him on my favourites list, and will watch the vids later on after we have finished cementing for the day. Sour dough is better for you than packet yeast, apparently it is easier to digest, so I will defo have a go. If I can do this, then I won't have to buy packets of dried yeast. They are not expensive, but making our own will be something else which we can be self sufficient with. Rock on Horst....... am going to start the Sour Dough Project on Sunday.

    1. Way to go Vera. I still have lots to learn with making bread but am working on it. White "All Purpose Flour" seems to have more natural yeast in it and I'm sure the most starch, so will rise higher. I had some of yesterdays bread this morning and it is very tasty.

  9. How did the bread making project go? I have made damper (an Australian traditional bread) that uses Self Raising flour. Great for camping.
Thanks for stopping by my blog this week. I hope you are going well.

    1. The project went real well, I made a number of loafs of bread and froze them. Will try different types of bread in my next project like Barley bread and 12 grain or even Ancient grain bread. Will stick to yeast packages as the fermenting of the sour dough leaves my bedroom full of alcohol fumes and hard to breath at night. You have a great day Jill, and thanks for stopping by.
