My visit to Greenland Garden Center

Hello every one, I went to Greenland Garden Center here in Edmonton Alberta Canada. On the 3rd of February the garden center had a grand opening of their Garden Display for the winter of 2013. I got to the center and what did I see but the center cat in the middle of the driveway. It was in my way to get to the parking spot. This little guy would not move, she new that she owned the place, so she made me go around her. So I did get around the cat and parked. As I got out got my camera and was getting near the door, the cat decided it wanted to go back into the greenhouse, as soon as the cat got to the door someone opened it, I thought how good can life get for this cat. Well as soon as I got to the door the cat was no where to be seen. So I went in and headed to the Coffee bar and had Apple strudel and a nice large coffee, sat down and enjoyed it very much. I looked around and took my coat off got myself comfortable and enjoyed the display.

I took a few photos so I could show you this panorama so I can give you an idea of what I was looking at. It was beautiful to just sit there and relax have a coffee and some apple strudel and enjoy the green and the fish. Some of the fish where about the size just right for the frying pan. Oh well, just dreaming. So when I finished my coffee I started taking some photos.

Well this was my visit to the Garden Center today. I was there for a couple of hours or so, the light was getting a little darker outside so I decided to go before it got to dark. I hope you enjoyed my visit as much as I did. I’m going back in about a month to see how it has changed (got greener) and take a few more photos.

  2. that certainly sounds like a nice outing Horst. It's nice to indulge in caffeine and cake and soak up the surrounds and watch the world go by. The photographs are lovely. Your header too is lovely; is it your art-work with brush and watercolours maybe?

  4. Now that is how a plant centre should be, full of plants, and, most importantly, a coffee shop! They don't have coffee shops attached to garden centres here in France but they do in the UK, and I really miss them. Used to be my bolt hole when things were getting me down. A cup of milky coffee and huge slice of cake, followed by an amble amongst the plants. Bliss!
    Lovely photos, as always.

    1. Your photos are wonderful and you have a great eye for taking the types of photos like a commercial photographer would. What you should try is taking some schooling in commercial photography, like at a technical school. A school that has technical training programs like our NAIT technical school here in Edmonton Canada. You have a wonderful week as well.

  17. Hi there Horst, managed to obey the urge to visiting my blog-friends, and what a delightful surprise in yours, I loved the pictures and the tale of the cat, LOL they're not stupid are they! the flower below the little waterfall...I have a houseplant of that, my grand daughter presented it to me on Mothering Sunday, and it is doing well sitting beside my television. Apple Strudel, mmmmmmm love it. Let me know next time you're going and I'll tag along.
Enjoy what's left of your week. X

    1. Thanks Arlene, would love to have you tag along. Not sure if you could afford the trip to Edmonton, here in Canada though. We are along way apart in mileage. ;-)

    2. I think my blogging friend Darlin that lives here in Edmonton, wants to come along as she is learning how to use the manual features of her camera, in other words she wants to be a real photographer rather than a point and shoot photographer that knows nothing about the setting on her camera.

  18. Garden centres are lovely places to visit aren't they? I haven't been to one for a while, maybe I will when the garden starts to wake up a bit! As always I love your photos, and good for Darlin, I have started an online photographic course to learn the same things as she wants to. Its going very slowly, there is so much to learn. Take care :)

  19. Okay, back to the Amaryllis topic for a moment, if you would , please ... mine has green leaves only as the flower decided to die before even opening ... it just went "plopp" one day, Horst ... I water the plant from the bottom every second day, and it has it's home in my sunny south window ... now what ... will it sprout another flower ... or am I continuing to kill it slowly but surely? Help!

    1. Hi Cat, you should only water once a week, let the soil dry out in between waterings. Also you should water from the top, not the bottom, as you will have a build up of mineral salts that will slowly kill the plant. If you water from the top, this will flush out the mineral salts out the bottom. Take the potted plant to the bath tub and give it a good long watering to flush out the mineral salts, then water it once a week and get the plant near the window to give it lots of light, another reason it may have aborted the flower.

    2. The flower will come again next year if you don't kill it first. It has to gain some energy, so put the plant out doors in late spring as long as there is no frost. You can even transplant it into the garden but you must lift the bulb before the frost in fall. I put mine out each spring/summer.

    1. Thanks OFG. We have about 3 or 4 garden centers that are open year round here in Edmonton. It is so nice to have a coffee and snack, and enjoy the green and the flowers that bloom at this time of year. Here the winters are very long.

  23. I love going to arboretums, garden centers and all of those "green" indoor places. So awesome! If I didn't know better I'd swear you took those pictures outside. Waterfalls are the best! You are such a good picture taker! You make it look easy. I haven't visited in awhile and I feel all cool and green like I'm sitting there with ya. Lovely as usual my friend.
