My Garden on Aug 20 2012

Yesterday I looked at my garden and realized that it will be finished very soon. It is starting to look overgrown. My back yard is a sea of flowers. I also found that one of my Red Amaryllis is going to bloom. I hope that the frost doesn’t come early this year as I would love to show you the lovely flower it will put out. I will have to start digging out the plants that I want to save and bring them in the house. It’s going to be a fair amount of work. Anyone wanting an Amaryllis this fall is welcome to get ahold of me and get a free bulb. I can also give advise on how to grow them.  I took a few photos of my back yard so you can see what I am talking about. I will also have to repot some of my plants.  Lots of fun. Here are my photos.

  1. Your garden looks lovely. Wish you were a little closer, I would love a bulb. They used to grow like weeds in our garden in South Africa but I have never tried them here. I am sure they would grow fine though. Diane

    1. I'm sure they would do well in France, but you would have to take them indoors in the autumn before the first frost. South Africa is where the bulbs originate from.

  2. Still tremendous color for fall. Yes, thingsbget overgrown and ragged at this time of year. I only do a vegetable garden and I'm starting to take the things out that are finished.

    1. ADRIAN, this is the first time after my hip surgery, that I was able to put in a nice bunch of flower. I think I went a little overboard. ;-)

  4. Horst, this is beautiful garden and it will be sad that the frost comes early. You should be proud of yourself as a gardener. There is such a beauty in your garden. My little garden isn't so beautiful this year. This is because of fire.

    1. Beth, one can also grow them in your house. I only have them in the garden in the summer, they come in before the frost arrives.

  6. nice to enjoy the colours in your garden. You are busying with preparations to start offering protection from the frosts, while I have spent the past four days in the gardens. It's payback time for having slackened off with the maintenance, weeding etc., over the colder months. There is a touch of spring right now, though it could be short-lived. Spring starts officially September 1 for us.

  7. Oh, (sigh) how I wish my back yard looked like yours does. How I wish (sigh) that there were flowers growing in my back yard. Even one flower with one bright bloom would be lovely. But my back yard is still suffering from the building work going on here, plus the chickens and geese romping over it all, plus the dogs of course. Not to worry, plenty of wild flowers out and about on our land. Would still (sigh) like to have a 'proper' garden. Oh well, one day.... Meanwhile, do please enjoy your garden for those of us who have not got one!

  8. Your garden is beautiful Horst. You obviously get a lot of pleasure from it so going overboard isn't really an issue in that case. I think it is fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I can almost smell the fresh scent of the geraniums. I LOVE seeing your back garden, Horst. After seeing the snow and ice last winter that you showed us, amazing what a turnaround.

    1. Hi Carole, our summers are very nice for plants but it just seems to be too short. Quite often we get some great autumns that last until the middle of November. We prefer a cold winter and lots of snow, so the the bad insects get killed off, and the farmers have a great growing season.

  10. Your plants look so fresh and green , it's beautiful. I would be happy to take a bulb , but sadly too far away across the pond. Your header is stunning.
    Best Wishes Sheila

    1. Thank you Sheila, I think I will lift the plant ( Gerbera Daisy plant) in the fall and see if I can winter it and replant it in the spring. Will be bringing all the Amaryllis plants indoors as soon as the nights get to cold.

  14. Horst, your garden is full botanical garden. Many beautiful flowers together. Lovely place. Also, a lot of work. Most flowers needs constant care. Sometimes it gets on my nerves. Also me. And I only have flowers on the balcony. It is true that a little more than others on balconies around. Winter is coming to Edmonton soon, right? This is still summer temperatures. Many greetings for you. Peter.

    1. Hi Peter, yes there are still summer temps here but one thing you should know is that the weather can change real fast in my part of the world, but the warm weather can also stay till Christmas. One never knows from year to year what the winters can be like.

  16. pretty, the colours in your garden Horst; everything looks well fed/healthy. You asked a question on my blog and since I can't email you a response (it is on the comments but I wasn't sure you'd get back to it).

"thanks for comments; and glad you enjoyed the flowers. Horst - I believe the pink/first photo is anenome. I always struggle between which is which anemone/ranunculus. Possibly the second flowers are the ranunculus. Someone, correct me, if I'm wrong :) on Springtime colours"
