A Few More Photos from Elk Island National Park

I thought I would post a few more photos from Elk Island National Park. I have been to this park many times, I have taken home many photos from there, and I’m sure that I will go back many more times. Here are some more photos.

My friend Russ and I found the fellow walking on the side of the road, looked like he was rolling in the mud, I took a photo of him through the drivers side wind past my friend Russ, who was driving. I made a few grunting sounds and he stopped, he looked straight at us and started to move towards us, I said oh oh, and asked Russ to step on the gas to get out of there. These fellows can move real fast if they want to, so Russ complied and we move very quickly away from him. I looked behind to see if he was in the ditch of where the vehicle was. Well he was in the middle of the road where we were, and looking at us. Wow, that was close.

This was a Beaver Pond that Was drained be the Park wardens so there would be more grass for the Bison.

Horst, you are brave. You were so close to these bisons. It took away my breath even thinking what could happen.

  2. Great photos of these magnificent buffalo. Your story made me smile, Horst.:) What a guy! Sounds like,"Don't fool with the cool because the cool don't fool". You can count your lucky stars he didn't catch up to you.
Hope all is well with you.

    1. Hey Beth, all you need to photograph these guys is a long lens and a steady hand. Oh yes, and some fear, so you can get away quick.

  4. Gosh, what a scary experience but at least you got some good shots. Like the drained pond best though, the way the sunlight moves through the trees is lovely, but those dead trees look very sombre. A nice mix.

  7. you certainly wouldn't want one of these ramming into your car! I know bison should be protected, but I don't understand why they drained the beaver pond?
Thanks for stopping by my blog Horst. Have a wonderful week.

    1. Hi Jill, there are hundreds of ponds in this National Park. The Beaver had moved on so the pond was not needed.

  11. I love your photos they are fantastic. I only have a very cheap camera and I get many disappointing shots but just occasionally......
I well know the feeling you had with the bison. I remember my father doing a very hasty reverse one day with a bull elephant taking a serious look at the front of our vehicle!! Diane
