My Poinsettias

I love to see if I can keep exotic plants alive, where as most people let them die off because they don’t know how to treat them. Poinsettia’s are one of the hardest to keep the red or even the leaves on the plant. Here are a few photos of my Poinsettia’s.

               Proud Poinsetta copy

       poinsetta 3 8x10

        poinsetta 4

The bottom 2 plants are the same plant that I have had for 8 years the top plant is a cutting from the mother plant I cut them both back every year so they are more manageable. I will have to cut them back in spring. They are like Bonsai trees already.

  1. It's incredible that you can keep the plants for so long. You definitely have a green thumb.

  5. We had one that had been doing well in the UK but sadly with all the moving around from the UK to France it has given up on us. I will have to start again :( It is annoying as in South Africa they just grew all over the garden!! Diane

  7. Gosh, what 'green fingers' you have Horst. I have trouble with keeping the simplest house plant alive, mostly because I have a tendency to forget to water them. Loved the last photo in particular, and also the header photo. That bird looked very perky peering through the branches.

  8. Very beautiful! I have no luck with indoor plants.

  9. I make it a habit to water them every Saturday morning. I water them twice a week in the summer when it is hot. I give them fertilizer every 2 weeks in the summer and once a month in the winter.

  11. Horst, that's fantastic. I have three indoor plants now that I break my back over trying to keep well and growing. One I got in '76. That was Mother's cactus, a succulent (of course) And, yes, I'm alriiiight! :-)

  12. Wow, the flower is beautiful! And good on ya for keeping them alive, I've tried to keep one alive forever ago but I don't think that I tried hard enough.

    Have a wonderful week Horst!

  13. Every Christmas I buy a poinsettia plant - and after every Christmas I try to keep it growing. But the flowers and the leaves fall, and then that is it! no more! Lovely images Horst, and love the processing - they look like Christmas cards.

    1. Hi Jill, the secret to keeping the Red leaves on the Poinsettia plant is to give it only 8 hours of light, then keep it in the closet until the next morning. The leaves only turn color(red), if the plant only gets 8 hours of light per day. For you Christmas is in the summer to much light per day to to keep the color. If you get to keep the plant in your winter then keep it in a north window to get as much sun as possible. Make sure it is in a room that does not get any other light (incandescent or florescent light). Then you should get a great colorful plant.

  14. This is a beauty Horst!
I still have one from Christmas, and it's still red which is the longest I've ever been able to keep one alive.
    We'll see where it goes...
    Have a great day!

  17. And the amaryllis that you created as hybrids? How are they?

  18. They are doing well. Some of them are dormant and some are still green and some are sprouting new leaves. I still have a bunch of them that I need to transplant, they are literally busting out of the pots. I've run out of repotable pots. I am using what ever I can get my hands on.
