My Red Amaryllis Opening

Hello followers, as I promised the Amaryllis is opening and showing us all how beautiful she is. Only one of the flowers is open and will open a little more in the next day or so. The other one will open by the end of the week. We are having a frost warning in the area around so I figured that I better take a photo just in case. So here are a couple of photos for you to look at. I will take more tomorrow if the frost don’t get my plants.

  1. What a lovely flower. Love the colour or it. Hope the frost stays away for a bit longer. No frost here, still coming out of late summer.

    1. Your lucky to live where you are. I'm sure your Autumn is much longer than ours. Some years we are lucky as well. So far the trees are just starting to turn color here. This is one of the clone babies of the mama plant. The mother will more than likely bloom after christmas.

  2. Is that the same flower from the other day? I thought by the colour of the bud it would be more mauve, but it is surely stunning.Do you keep them indoors from now on?They are such a bright spot in the fall/autumn days.Greetings from Jean in NZ.

    1. Hi Jean, yes it's the same flower. I keep them indoors when it gets to cold outside. I have to dig them up in the next few days so they don't freeze. All the potted ones are already in the house. Fifteen to twenty more to repott.

  4. Excellent.....I am happy the frost has kept away. We have a fleece material for draping over plants. It helps down to -3/5 centigrade. It's dirt cheap and looks like fluffy glass fibres.

    1. Kaya, this flower is usually sold around Christmas time, and it is sold as an indoor plant. There are subtropical and must be lifted from the garden and taken inside when it gets cold. They will die is not taken inside. They normally bloom around Christmas time, mine is blooming a little early.

    2. Kaya, these plants can live 10 or even more years if you take good care of them. They will also give you lots of clone babies to give to your friends.

  21. Can you grow amaryllis out of doors? I may be given one for Christmas sometimes but I throw them away when they've finished flowering. Am I doing something silly?

    1. These beautiful flowers will flower year after year for 10 or more years. You can plant them outdoors then repott them and bring them indoors, let them rest for 2 months then water and feed them again and they will bloom for you after Christmas. To throw them away is a waste of a beautiful plant. It takes 5 years for them to start blooming in the first place. I know I have started them from seed.

  22. so exotic and a beautiful colour. Five years - it is worth the wait! I wish I had them in my garden.
Thank you for stopping by my blog Horst the other day, and for your lovely comment. Yes I would love to get into professional food photography. Just need an opportunity to start! So thank you for the encouragement.

    1. The only problem to going commercial is the cost of all of the equipment you will need, is prohibitive. You seem to have the talent.

If you don't have any freezing temps in the winter then your garden would be a great place to have many Amaryllis. Garden centers in your area should be selling Amaryllis around this time of year. Just inquire.

  25. Thank you very much for your advice, Horst. Does that mean that the bulb can stay in earth all the time? If so, any special compost? Acid or alkaline, rich, sandy?

  26. No frost here and thank goodness. I am going to tke your advice and leave mother's cactus with it's carrion smelling flowers out till it's really too cold. IF I can. There are three blooms on it already and as of yesterday they had not yet opened. When they do..oh, man! PEWWWW.

    1. Your Cactus will really draw in those flies when it does bloom. Keep it far away from the house or the flies will find their way indoors.

My Epiphyllum has only 1 bloom on it so far and is showing signs of old age. will have to repott it, give it new soil and a hair cut.

  28. Horst this flower is gorgeous, you've done an excellent job of capturing the sheer beauty and the photos are so clear. Well done!

I'd imagine that the frost has done a number of these beautiful flowers; on this end I'm hoping for a few more nice days so I can do some outdoor work, if I can I can, if not such is life.

    Cheers.
